Following the continuation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Council of the European Union, during its meeting on September 28th, 2023, extended the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian citizens until March 4th, 2025.
This instrument had been activated on March 4th, 2022, just a few days after the start of the military conflict, and, as provided for by EU regulations, had been automatically renewed for one year.
Following the continuation of the conflict, the Council of the European Union deemed it appropriate to provide for its effectiveness for a further year, in view of the large number of refugees present in the European Union’s territories (more than 4 million), in order to give them further certainty regarding their stay in the EU States in which they have found refuge.
Furthermore, the Council believes that in this way it is further showed the support of the European Union to Ukrainian people for “as long as it takes“, as emphasised by the acting Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska Gómez.
